Moonshot, Baby

December 13, 2008

The Moon is a perigee now–its time of closest approach to the Earth. I took this shot with a Canon 50D and a 500mm f4 IS lens with 1.4x teleconverter using autofocus, mirror lockup, and a cable release. Exposure was f/8, 1/250, ISO 100.

Sunset Over Harvard Business School

November 2, 2008

Several people noticed Saturday’s extraordinary sunset here in the Boston area. This shot looks towards the Harvard Business School from across the Charles River in Cambridge. Unfortunately, I missed the peak of this amazing sunset by about five minutes.

Shooting Pelicans

October 26, 2008

I spent the afternoon at Pigeon Point Lighthouse, practicing panning shots with my 500mm lens and 1.4x tele-extender. My subject of choice was the California brown pelican. The day was a little foggy so I’ve done a Levels adjustment on this to increase the dynamic range. By the end of the day I was definitely better at panning, though getting an initial sighting through such a large lens is still sometimes challenging. It takes practice to see an object with the naked eye and then quickly get the object in the len’s field of view–especially when that object is moving.

When shooting subjects like this, don’t forget to stop down as much as you can to increase the depth of field and improve you chances of getting good focus.

Coyote Hill Road

March 16, 2008

There is something about the light that seems different in California…something I don’t see in Boston. This shot was taken late in the day on Coyote Hill Road in Palo Alto, not far from Xerox PARC and VMware.

Labrador Ice and Snow

February 2, 2008

Wind-blown snow on ice in Labrador. The boomerang shaped island and the linear formation beyond it in the second photo were unusual enough for me to find this location on Google Maps.
